September 30, 2025 - Dissecting the Implications of Trump's "Board of Peace" Plan for Gaza

Donald Trump unveiled a 20-point Gaza peace plan which Israel Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has reportedly agreed to.
Various authors have speculated on the likely outcomes of this peace plan for the troubled region. As Tom Bateman has found, the peace plan faces several obstacles. As Bateman finds, ‘Whether it can become a reality in the coming weeks will depend heavily on the same issues that have always been fundamental: whether both Netanyahu and the leadership of Hamas now see greater gains in ending the war than in continuing it … Netanyahu, standing next to the US president, said Israel accepted Trump's 20 principles, even though a leader in the far-right flank of his coalition had already rejected some of them. But acceptance of Trump's principles alone is not the same as actually ending the war. And while Netanyahu rejects this accusation, his domestic opponents say he has form for spiking an emerging deal if it endangers his political survival at home … There is also enough ambiguity in the plan that either side can appear to accept it while using the course of further negotiations to sabotage it, blaming the other side for its failure.’ (BBC.2025) As Bateman has found, the success of this peace plan relies heavily on both sides agreeing to the seemingly ambiguous terms of the transitional government and implementation of the plan.
The proposed peace deal brings us closer to a final end to the ongoing Israel-Palestine War, and as the Telegraph has reported, Hamas is considering surrendering weapons under Trump’s plan. As the paper notes ‘Hamas is considering surrendering its weapons under Donald Trump’s proposal for peace in Gaza.
The US president, with Israel’s backing, announced on Monday that he would oversee a transitional government in the Strip with the assistance of Sir Tony Blair as part of his 20-point plan for “eternal peace in the Middle East”.
The Palestinian terror group is currently reviewing the deal in “good faith” after being presented with its terms last night, a person familiar with the matter told the Associated Press. Mr Trump’s proposal calls for a ceasefire and the release of all hostages by Hamas within 72 hours, as well as the terror group’s disarmament and Israel’s gradual withdrawal from the Strip. A post-war transitional authority ran by Mr Trump and known as the Board of Peace would also be established. Hamas members who “commit to peaceful co-existence and to decommission their weapons will be given amnesty”, the plan states, adding that those who wish to leave Gaza will be provided safe passage to receiving countries.’ (The Telegraph.2025) As the Telegraph has put forth, several figures in the hierarchy of Hamas are considering the terms of the peace deal and as the U.K. Prime Minister who has welcomed the proposal has stated, it is time to put an end to the misery in the region.
The ‘Board of Peace’ plan for Gaza is a promising step in the pursuit of peace in the region, however, if it heavily preferences Israel’s interests and continues to subjugate Palestinians in the region, resistance to the deal from Hamas and the Palestinians is inevitable.
